How to Draw A Luna Moth

Step 1

As with any moth, there are many intricate details and structures to be found in this particular insect.

That’s why we’ve broken the drawing into smaller steps in this how-to guide on how to draw a moon moth.

This should make it easier to master all the tricky elements and details you might encounter!

First, let’s start with the core of this moon moth. You can use small curved lines and rounded shapes for the moth’s head to do this.

This includes the insect’s antennae, which are drawn as pointed, curved shapes.

Next, we draw the tops of the wings. To do this, draw a few slightly curved lines horizontally from the base of the head.

We’re going for symmetry with this design, so do your best to have the same length and angle.

Step 2

The body of this moth is relatively small, and we will outline the body at this stage of drawing the Luna moth.

First, extend two short, curved lines from the head. This forms a square shape, with a gap at the base under this first section.

This is followed by curved lines, forming a rounded section below, and then we draw the belly.

This lower body section consists of a rounded outline with short lines to form sections. Then you are ready for step 3 of the guide!

Step 3

Things can get tricky in this third step in attracting a luna moth!

This is because we will start work on the wings’ decorative elements, which is the moth’s most complicated part.

However, as long as you follow our reference image closely, you shouldn’t have any problems with it!

First, use some curved lines to create the bottom edge of the top of the wings. Next, we’ll use curved lines and round shapes for the pattern on the wings.

This is another step where it would be best to make it look as symmetrical as possible. If you need help with this, copying our reference image is the best way to make it easier!

Step 4

We will finish the rest of the wing outlines before we start on the final details of this luna moth design.

First, draw the bottom edges of the wings with wavy lines. Next, we’ll add the long, thin tail sections of the wings that will follow the moth.

Once the outlines are done, you can also add a few more details. Once you’re done with those details, we’re ready for the final details and stuff in the next step of the guide!

Step 5

We still have a few small details to add before we get to the final phase of this how-to guide on drawing a moon moth!
